Drilling Mechanics and Performance Optimization Course

Drilling Mechanics & Performance develops a practical, physics-based understanding of how drilling inputs become rock removal, how bit-rock interaction and drilling dysfunction define operating limits, and how engineers distinguish drilling speed from true operational performance. The course covers ROP, WOB, RPM and depth of cut; PDC and roller-cone bit mechanics; bit hydraulics and positive-displacement motors; RPM-WOB operating windows; shock, vibration and torque response; performance measurement and benchmarking; and the development of Mechanical Specific Energy from its physical foundations through standardized real-time surveillance.

Designed for drilling and petroleum engineers, drilling-performance and optimization personnel, and technical professionals from early-career through practicing level, the course emphasizes moving from observed signals to defensible engineering decisions. Participants will learn to select performance indicators at the correct decision scale, recognize inefficient and dysfunctional drilling behavior, use MSE as a relative efficiency and surveillance tool rather than an absolute truth, conduct disciplined parameter tests, identify active performance limiters, and use offset learning to redesign bits, BHAs, motors, hydraulics and operating practices for improved section performance.
