Drilling Geomechanics & Wellbore Stability provides a practical, physics-based understanding of how pore pressure, in-situ stress, rock strength, drilling-fluid chemistry, well trajectory, temperature, time, and reservoir depletion interact to control wellbore behaviour.

The course develops stability from first principles—including compaction and pore-pressure prediction, effective stress, stress regimes, rock deformation and failure, stress transformation, Mohr-Coulomb behaviour, near-wellbore stress redistribution, breakouts, tensile fractures, and the safe mud-weight window—before connecting these concepts to mechanical and chemical instability, common drilling problems, stable-well planning, depleted formations, and wellbore-strengthening strategies.

This sequence matches the course’s progression from pressure/stress/rock properties through geomechanics, common problems, planning, depletion and diagnosis.

Designed for drilling, petroleum and well engineers, geomechanics professionals, and technical personnel from early-career through practicing level, the course emphasizes moving from symptoms to defensible engineering diagnosis.

Participants will learn to integrate drilling data, borehole images, caliper and resistivity responses, cuttings and cavings, rock properties, pressure measurements, trajectory, chemistry and offset experience to distinguish competing instability mechanisms and select appropriate preventive or remedial actions.

The course concludes with structured root-cause analysis and probabilistic reasoning to support better decisions when the available evidence is incomplete.
