Michael Webb is the owner of Michael Webb Geoconsulting Ltd., founded in 2024. In his most recent role, he acted as the Senior Geology Advisor at Suncor Energy from 2012-2023, working with geoscientists and engineers in the In Situ and E&P businesses. During his time in the advisor role, he was responsible for peer reviews, technical quality and standards in geoscience, and building technical skills in geoscience teams. Before acting as Geology Advisor, he was the Geoscience Manager for the Mackay River SAGD asset.

Michael earned a PhD in fluvial sedimentology and stratigraphy from the University of Wyoming, where he studied fluvial systems and fossil assemblages from the Lance Formation in the Bighorn Basin. He has extensive experience working on SAGD development projects in the McMurray Formation of northeast Alberta. He also held production, development, and exploration geoscience roles in Southern Alberta, Mackenzie Delta/Beaufort Sea, Wyoming, Colorado, and North Dakota.

Michael has a passion for geoscience education and has taught over 40 core- and field-based courses for Suncor Energy. These courses include Geology for Engineers and Non-Geologists, a Fluvial Field Course, a Shoreface and Delta Course, a Petroleum Systems course in Kananaskis, and an integrated Reservoir Management and Uncertainty Course. He has also led dozens of core workshops related to specific assets and depositional environments. In support of his teaching efforts, he received a Suncor President’s Operational Excellence Award in 2017, and Best Core Presentation from the CSPG Core Conference in 2018. He is an active volunteer and member of CEGA (Canadian Energy Geoscience Association) and other technical associations.
