Barry has over 36 years research experience in petroleum geochemistry and analytical chemistry. In addition, he has implemented a number of analytical protocols based on solid phase extraction in several research projects to maximize the value of this technology as well as reducing the environmental footprint associated with traditional chromatographic methods. Research has been published in mainstream journals and presented at major scientific meetings. Barry was a Research Associate at Newcastle University investigating thermal conversion of organic matter simulating petroleum generation, polar compound analysis, oil-water partitioning of alkylphenols, application of migration tracers, reservoir geochemistry and crude oil biodegradation. At the University of Calgary, he continued as a Research Associate working on the origin of crude oil biodegradation and on thermal upgrading of bitumen (AICISE). Barry joined Gushor Inc., a spin off company launched out of the University of Calgary working on problems associated with heavy oil recovery, starting initially on the problems associated with physical property measurements. Barry was responsible for laboratory quality control and method development, and advanced viscosity prediction at Gushor. Barry was Global Domain Champion for Geochemistry at Schlumberger working on integrating petroleum reservoir geochemistry with petroleum engineering, wettability alteration, fluid inclusions, the origin of heavy oil and oil sands and oil production issues. Barry is currently Managing Director and Senior Geochemist for Applied Petroleum Technology in the United Kingdom.
