Geology for Engineers

Course Overview This course presents the basics of petroleum geology for non-geologists, including engineers, managers, and professionals in finance, business, operations, land, environment/EHS, banking, and geomatics/GIS. Emphasis will be placed on the practical knowledge needed to improve communication within and across integrated team personnel. No previous knowledge of geology is necessary.

Topics Include:
• Introduction to the geosciences and geologic concepts
• Sedimentary rocks, sedimentary basins, and their environments of deposition
• Elements of a petroleum system (source, seal, reservoir, migration, trap)
• Oil and gas life cycle from exploration well to field abandonment
• Subsurface data sets (logs, core, seismic)
• Maps and mapping
• General geology of major oil and gas reservoirs in Alberta, both conventional and unconventional
