Fractional Dimension RTA

4:02 Hours
Unconventional wells show features that make them very difficult to characterize. One of them is the “transitional” flow regime that lasts months to years and is different from known flow regimes such as linear or boundary dominated flow. Fractals and fractional dimension systems provide a powerful approach to address this problem and the presenter is a pioneer in this field. Concepts originally developed in the early 90’s were significantly expanded with innovative elements, rigorous solutions, modeling techniques, and adapted to the geometry of unconventional wells. The result is Fractional Dimension RTA (FD-RTA), a new technique to analyze and understand fracture networks ranging from complex ones to simple ones such the equally spaced fracture model. This course provides a solid foundation for this technique as well as seven examples ranging from single-phase cases to complex multiphase numerical calibration cases. FD-RTA is implemented with varying levels of sophistication in several commercial RTA software solutions. We emphasize methods and concepts leaving specific software instructions for the engineers to solve through interaction with their respective vendor. This course allows the practicing engineer to see what is possible with FD-RTA.
